X Old Coat Class Description



Statement coats are the latest quarantine obsession. Outdoor dining and outdoor activities are the new norm, your coat can be your new forward fashion statement.

Statement Coats are Having a Moment!”  You too can have your own moment making your own statement coat. Whether you use a pattern as it or hack in your own design changes.

1st class - September 25, 2-5 pm.Your pattern will first be altered to fit your measurements before sewing. Bring in your pattern and fabric to this class.  Layout, cut and mark pattern pieces.*

2nd class - October 9, 2-5 pm. Test fabric to select fusible interfacing, provided in class.  Test stitching and start sewing.  Fuse facings, upper collars, under collars to interfacing.*

3rd class - October 30th, 2-5 pm.  Continue to sew the body of the coat and check the fit prior to setting in sleeves (unless yours is a raglan sleeve style, they will need to be sewn in)

4th class - November 20 Set in sleeves, cut out lining and construct.  Set in lining

5th class - November 27 The finishing - Hemming, topstitching, buttonholes and buttons.

*There are weeks off between classes and you may need to do a little sewing at home or join a another class if needed.

Class size: ONLY 5 STUDENTS and you must wear a mask.

Skill Details:
Coats are easier to sew than most blouses or shirts so you need to have some sewing experience. No beginners please.
Materials Included:
Sewing machine, serger, cutting and sewing tables, cutting mats, rulers, irons, papter paper are available for the student's use.
Requirements:
Select a pattern and your fabric, lining, shoulder pads, buttons, all purpose thread, pins, fabric scissors, sewing tools like a seam ripper, fabric maker and bring to class. Do not alter pattern or cut out before class. Interfacing will be available for purchase at the class. Do not buy interfacing until it is tested with your fabric. The cost will be less than if you purchase it yourself at a store. If you need shoulder pads, email me along with your pattern selection prior to class so I can source them. Ryliss@comcast.net

Instructor Bio:
Ryliss Bod is the Founder and Director of the Sewing & Design School and has extensive experience teaching Fashion Construction and Design at a Washington State Technical College. She instructed courses for both continuing education and career training in all levels of sewing construction, home décor construction, fashion accessory construction, fashion design, fitting & pattern alterations, pattern-making, textiles, history of fashion and quilting.

She received her teaching degree in K-12 grades and studied art, clothing and textiles at Central Washington University, pattern-making and CAD at Gerber Technology, fashion design at the Paris Fashion Institute, pattern-making and construction techniques with Kenneth D. King and countless others.

Throughout her career she developed workshops and fashion shows, hired instructors and conducted fashion and fabric shopping field trips to Portland, San Francisco and New York. Ryliss has been a Contributing Editor at Sew News Magazine, Threads Magazine, judge for the 2014 RAGS Benefit, Make it With Wool and the Washington State 4-H Dress Revue and host of Instagram's Sew Photo Challenge #sewApril2017 and #sewapril2018..
